5 Weeks to Philly Half Marathon

We all know I’ve been struggling to exercise lately.  I get workouts in here and there but it isn’t enough, especially with the Philadelphia Half Marathon on the calendar next month!  Well, here is my last ditch effort to train for that half marathon if it is the last thing I do.

I’m not going to go into my planning details for this but I do have some things I need to do to make it successful:

  • Do my workouts first thing in the morning (when possible).
  • No workout substitutions!
  • Just do it.

Since I’m often too tired or rushed at the end of the day, I just need to start doing all workouts first thing in the morning.  This will take a lot of lifestyle changes such as going to bed earlier and getting up earlier on the weekends.  This affects a lot of things other than my sleep schedule, especially time spent with my husband so there will be an adjustment.  Hopefully it won’t be too bad now that rugby is over so we have more time to spend together on the weekends anyway.

I can’t be changing my workouts constantly.  I should just follow the schedule!  I have a bad habit lately of just doing a workout DVD instead of a run, often after a long day at school/the clinic.  I really need to just suck it up and go for some runs.  I am allowing myself a little wiggle room on the Thursday workout, with options such as speed work or intense cross training like Insanity or Focus T25 DVDs.  The yoga day is optional rest day also, but the rest of the days are fixed!

Now that I have a decent schedule and a plan, all I need to do is just do it!  It sounds so simple yet can be so hard.  I’ve got a couple of friends who have been really keeping me accountable lately and that helps a ton but it is still up to me to stop making excuses and get myself moving!

Have you trained for an endurance event by following a training plan?

I am not a trained running/fitness professional in any way so use my plans at your own risk.  I only post them for my own personal documentation.  There are a lot of great trainers and coaches out there to make you a training plan of your own!

  1. This sounds like me with every training plan I do. I struggle to get it done! It looks like you’re doing much better than I usually do so you’ll be good! 🙂 PS I’m so jealous you’re doing the Philly half, I want to run that marathon someday!
