Goodbye Oatmeal

I know better!  I really do!  But I did my own little anti-Paleo experiment.  Yesterday, something got into me, and I just didn’t eat like normal for me.  I skipped the veggies in my breakfast (wasn’t hungry).  Then, I decided to give oatmeal a try again and then it was all downhill from there.  My only respectable meal was lunch.  Here is what I ate yesterday:

  • 2 eggs scrambled with almond milk (8AM)
  • Steel cut oats with almond milk and a banana (9AM)
  • Decaf coffee with cream and sugar
  • Spaghetti squash with tomato sauce, zucchini, and sausage (11AM)
  • Dunkin Donuts hashbrowns (1:30PM)
  • Dunkin Donuts glazed donut (1:30PM)
  • Iced coffee (barely drank it)
  • Chicken tenders and french fries (5PM)
  • Grapes and some grapefruit (8PM)

I think it all started with the oatmeal!  Within an hour and a half, I felt tired and lethargic.  I haven’t had that afternoon slump lately like I used to and I think its because I stopped having my morning oatmeal.  Also, I got very bloaty and felt sick.  By dinner time, I was even craving veggies but couldn’t decide what I wanted to so went with what Rob was getting.  Also, I was very snacky (hence the DD), also a direct result of the oatmeal.  Due to my entire diet from yesterday, I woke up feeling terrible this morning.  So it looks like I am going to have to give up my last non-Paleo love. Goodbye my lovely oatmeal!

On another note, I slept terrible again.  I was entirely too hot last night and tossed and turned.  Today, I met with my doctor about this shortness of breathe thing I’ve had and she couldn’t hear or find anything abnormal.  She agrees that it could just be stress.  Told me to try to relax and see if it goes away on its own.  She also gave me a script for blood work since I haven’t had it in almost 2 years.  Last time, I found out my bad cholesterol was too high.  I am very interested to see how the numbers come out this time!

DSCN6922Totally unrelated, I got my haircut yesterday!  My hair was cute enough but not really me.  On a whim, while we were at the mall, we stopped at Regis.  Its still just ok.  I am growing it out so I have to deal with those in-between cuts.  Good enough for now!  Maybe I need to dye it again or something?  Make it more fun!

Rob will be drawing the name for the winner of the Bob Harper DVD later today so you still have a chance to enter!

  1. I wish you could’ve heard my pleased/ surprised “ooo!” at your hair! 🙂

Lemme say: I *know* anybody who gets diagnosed with something “sees” it everywhere BUT…

Oats are often cross-contaminated (CC) with gluten and Celiac.org claims ONE in 133 are Celiac (undiagnosed). Just tossing that out there cos… when you get off grains and then have a little something? A quick reaction MEANS something. Maybe all it means is you don’t handle grains well. Maybe it was your COMBO with deep-fat fried freaked you out (cos not only is deep-fat fried evil on its own but IT’S ALWAYS *full* of gluten). FULL!!! The way to ruin a perfectly erm…un-gluten food is to pop it in oil that has fried anything with breading/ coating (including “broth” and most sauces–not just the obvious “rolling in flour”).

It’s too bad that it wasn’t the only thing non-Paleo you ate cos then you could really pin-point gluten (that evil @#$%^).

Hope you feel better soon! Oh, also: when I started eating meat a few years ago after being flexitarian (veg MOST of the time with maybe one serving of meat a week) for 16+ years, I thought that I was going to die. Bloat? Ahem. My body couldn’t PROCESS it. It hadn’t needed to in so long that I had to make sure I ate veg and fruit with meat (enzymes to help break down) and additional digestive aids (when I started Shakeology). Eventually (about a month), I acclimated to daily meat-eating but seriously. I thought I was going to have a heart attack or explode…bad feeling.

    1. Thanks for the hair compliment 🙂 It’s growing on me..

Well, I have the reaction after the eggs and oatmeal but before I ate anything else so it was easy to point the finger!

And Rob and I just had a similar conversation the other day. I think it may be *solid grains* that I have an issue digesting like rice, steel cut oats, etc. Last week when I had the bad reaction to grains (since we always share TMI), let’s just say I know I didn’t digest them at all. Came out looking the same! So I guess so solid grains for me. The plan is to go completely Paleo and I might try soft grains like rolled oats (I have Bob’d Red Mill Gluten Free Oats) and maybe pasta as treats but not on a regular basis!

      1. BTW– hair is “growing” on you?! 🙂

Yeah, I ate some gluten-free cookies (ahem–BAD LILY) that used a combo of grains, including corn which I know I don’t tolerate well and had the IBS / explosive thing that I never used to have before. It could NOT have been gluten but did include some corn and mostly tapioca 🙁

  2. love the haircut- its really cute! I have definitely found certain foods effect my stomach as well. Now if I could just stay away from the candy and carbs, I would be great! haha
