Book Review: Paleoista

I finished reading Paleoista by Nell Stephenson sometime last week.  It only took me about a week of reading before bed only on weekdays to finish it so it shows you just how quick of a read it is.  I’m not sure if I enjoyed it or not.  It told me a lot of things I already knew, but it contains 50 recipes which is the real reason I purchased it.

The book starts off talking about why she wrote the book.  I had to laugh because I agreed with this part completely. While I don’t mind reading many types of Paleo based sites such as The Paleo Diet, Mark’s Daily Apple, and Paleoista itself, sometimes you run across the “I am caveman” type stuff.  I’m sorry but I am no caveman.  Nell says she wrote the book for the modern woman who is interested in being Paleo without the whole cavewoman thing.

If you are looking for scientific reasons behind why you should eat Paleo, this book is not it. This is more of a guidebook on how to follow a Paleo lifestyle than why you should do it.  There is a little of the science in there but not much; she mostly just refers you to The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain (basically, the Paleo bible).  This book is like a beginner’s guide to Paleo.  Simple, not overwhelming.  She even talks about how to cook and grocery shop, both sections that I simply skimmed.

Basically, if you are looking for a simple read on how to follow a Paleo Diet, then this book is for you.  If you need to be convinced that the Paleo Diet is for you through scientific research, then perhaps the book I’m reading now would be better (hehe you have to wait for the review!).  Or if you are simply looking for some grain free recipes, you could check out her many recipes at the end of the book.  This book has enough information for the health-conscious but it is also simple enough for the health-newbie.  An easy read!

  1. I read the book also, an easy read. I’m going a little backwards as I’m reading “The Paleo Solution” by Robb Wolf. More technical but funny and it has pictures!

    1. Bah! You gave it away! LoL, that is the book that is more scientific. I love his light-hearted approach. I just finished the sleep & stress chapter and the whole time it was like “OMG That’s me! How does he know me so well???” I can’t put it down!
