Buying Local Groceries

Good morning!  Last week was pretty slow on the fitness front.  I was taking it easy, not stressing or killing myself.  I even skipped the gym all week.  I actually did that because I needed to field phone calls and other important things but I didn’t make up those workouts either.  It was a rest week and it felt good.  Your body needs that sometimes!

2016-03-12 12.32.17This weekend, Rob and I tried out a new-to-us meat market.  We were going to his brother’s housewarming party, about 40 minutes away, in farm country (we live in the woods but not many great farms or markets nearby).  We knew there were several great markets out there so we looked online and found Marcacci’s Meats & Produce.  It had good reviews so we figured we would give it a try.  We ended up getting a nice haul.

  • 8.5lbs Chicken Quarters
  • 2.3lbs Ground Beef
  • 1.8lbs Thick Cut Bacon
  • 1.1lb Chorizo
  • 2.7lb Chuck Steak
  • 1.7lb Sage Sausage

We spent $45 total and this should last us about 2 weeks.  We were really happy with the prices overall though.  10lb bags of chicken breast were like $1.60 per pound I think.  That’s a great price!  I think a monthly drive out there might be worth it!

We also went to our local Produce Outlet for our veggies.  We spent $41.

  • Radishes
  • Celery
  • Coleslaw
  • Broccoli Crowns
  • Zucchini
  • Carrots
  • Avocados
  • Iceberg Lettuce
  • Mixed Greens
  • Asparagus
  • Limes
  • Baby Portabellas
  • Mixed Bell Peppers
  • Blueberries
  • Tomatoes on the Vine
  • Bananas

We needed a couple of things from the regular grocery store so made a quick trip and spent $21

  • Lemon Juice
  • Stevia
  • Cashew Milk
  • Half and Half
  • Frozen Brussels Sprouts
  • Eggs

I didn’t need the Brussels sprouts but these were on sale for $0.99 so I figured it was okay!  And this way, I don’t have to eat them right away.

FoodCollage_2016-03-14Look at all that delicousness!

We don’t really have certain meals planned out yet.  Here are some ideas we came up with:

  • Eggs and Chorizo (for breakfast)
  • Bacon Cheeseburgers wrapped in iceberg lettuce with Coleslaw on the side
  • Beef Stew (chuck steak, celery, carrots)
  • Meat sauce over Zoodles (spiralized zucchini “noodles”)

Typically, we aren’t fancy and just pair a meat with a vegetable and call it a meal.  So for a total of $107, we got a great haul!  This should last 2 weeks or more if we freeze some stuff.  You could also make it last longer if you add in some staples like rice, quinoa, or whole wheat pasta.  Looking forward to some healthy meals in my future!

What would you make with my grocery haul?
