Creating a Cancer-Focused Workout Plan

Today’s post is a special guest post talking about a topic close to my heart.  I believe that all aspects of health can be benefited by a good diet and regular exercise, even those with chronic illness such as cancer.  So let’s get on to the article:

About the Author:  Melanie is currently a Master’s student with a passion that stems from her grandmother’s cancer diagnosis. She often highlights the great benefits of alternative nutritional, emotional, and physical treatments on those diagnosed with cancer or other serious illness.  In her spare time, you can find Melanie trying new vegan recipes, on her yoga mat, or spending time with her family.

Living a healthy lifestyle is important for everyone, especially those who are battling cancer and are undergoing treatment. Those who are in the fight of their life can highly benefit from a fitness program. Exercise helps the body in a variety of ways that you might not even know about. Whether you were recently diagnosed with a type of cancer like mesothelioma or you’re in remission for your diagnosis, there are still many things you should know about exercise and how it can help heal your body.

What Exercises to Do

The type of exercise you should do really depends on your current state of health and your interests. Many cancer patients find that even just a few minutes of light walking each day is enough to get their heart pumping and their skin sweating. There is nothing better than going out in the warm spring or summer air for a gentle walk down the road. During the frigid months, you can invest in a good quality treadmill and stay inside where it is warm. If walking is too much for you, you might want to look at some sit-down exercises that are available for you to do as well.

Speaking with a Doctor

You need to talk to a doctor and a physical therapist before you start working out on your own. You do not want to begin exercises that could hurt you in the long run because of muscle tension or strain. As a cancer patient, it is essential that more focus be put into your well-being and health, than just working out until you are tired or sore. Your doctor needs to be involved in the exercise program that you establish to ensure that it is a healthy choice for you and your current state.

Feel Good and Look Good

Fitness and exercise can help you to feel good and more energized throughout the day. Your workout program might even give you a new outlook on life that you thoroughly enjoy. For many cancer patients, it can even help in terms of healing after treatment and feeling better in remission. You should not treat fitness as a cure for cancer because it is not, but it can help tremendously when it comes to how you feel each and every day when undergoing treatment.
