Getting It Back

Last week sometime I took my measurements and they are bad.  I’m not ready to share the exact numbers or the progress pictures yet but just take a look at my weight chart that I’ve been keeping for the last 4 and a half years.

WeightChart_2013-10-15

A lot happened over the last year and a half to propel that line upward.  The two biggest things were stress and injury and it has been a losing battle the last few months.  I am aware of the problem but seemingly unable to stop it.  (I can actually stop it with enough determination but anyone who has struggled with gaining or losing weight knows that there is more to it than “just do it”!)

So, it felt both good and bad to take my measurements and see the progress pictures (which resemble my old “before” pictures a little too much).  Maybe it was the kick in the pants I needed?  I’m also a believer of you’ll do it when you’re ready or in your own time.  I know I wasn’t really ready the last few months.  Am I now?  Well, honestly only time will tell.  Back in June 2009, when I first joined Spark People and steadily began to steadily lose weight, I really wasn’t sure how it would go.  I just kept working at it and the weight came off.  I slowly got fitter, healthier, stronger.  There was no way for me to tell that it was the right time. It just was.

I had it really easy back then (in 2009, I worked a 9-5 and had no other obligations!) but people busier than me are successful at being fit and healthy so there’s really no excuse.  It is just a difference in priorities (I often pick homework or studying over gym time), so I’m just going to keep plugging away at it.  Each day, I’ll make health a higher priority in any way that I can.  Maybe I can’t make it to the gym that day but I can pack a healthy lunch.

Small things will add up over time and hopefully I can build some healthy habits again to make it that much easier (because you don’t have to think about habits!).  I’m already in the habit of packing lunch.  Next, maybe I can get better at drinking enough water or hitting the gym more days of the week.  Slowly but surely, I will get back my healthy, strong body I once had!

I’m in almost the exact same place right now. It’s been tough dealing with injury, stress, and major life changes that have contributed to weight gain. It’s so frustrating, but we’re at an advantage because we’ve done it once before and we CAN do it again!

Yes, you will! You can do it because you know what you need to do and you know that you’ve succeeded before! When you are ready, you will build on those successes and you’ll continue on that journey back to where you want to be…like you said, you need to be ready. You also know that stress, lack of good sleep and readiness are all factors. Keep making good choices, stay as active as you can given your schedule and work on those stress and sleep levels!

Hang in there, girl…your time is coming!!!

you can do it! the pictures, writing posts like this, the chart, everything are all important steps to get you motivated. maybe set up a little weekly reward to yourself for every successful week!

you can do it!!! We both can! We did it once and we will get back there (maybe we need to do a challenge between eachother? or our blogs?) something to keep each other accountable. maybe weekly goals for eachother or just someone to check in with?) just a thought. But I know no matter what, we are going to do this!!!

You can definitely get there again and I love how you recognise that you have to be ready — cos that’s true. Nobody can quit smoking cos somebody tells them they should or nobody would smoke. You have to want it more than the alternative cos it’s work. It seems like ‘not’ doing something should be easy but it’s not.

    • I rarely give health or weight loss advice to people I know because when they are ready, they’ll come to me. (And sometimes when they do, they don’t like what they hear anyway so they really aren’t ready). I wish more people would realize its up to themselves to decide when they will lose weight and stop looking for external motivation! I can tell you a million times how easy it is to make healthy choices but it really isn’t unless you want to!

I love discussing fitness and health stuff but advice? Erm…as far as I go (because I know people don’t want to do ANYTHING — heck, I don’t ‘want’ to do anything!) is: ‘if you have gut issues, you’ll really benefit from avoiding gluten and dairy.’

Cos bare-bones, it’s 100% going to help. It won’t cure you but avoiding those two devils? Absolutely gonna help!
