Local Eats: Uncle Bill’s Pancake House

When my sister first told me the name of this place, I giggled a little because I have an Uncle Bill.  Anyway, she claimed it was amazing and we should go since I wanted to try someplace I’d never been before.  Off we went!

The location we chose (there are several) was the 40th Street one in Ocean City, NJ.  I expected it to be really busy and it was (summertime at the beach!).  We only waited about 10 minutes though because we were willing to sit at the counter.  The stools have backs and your feet can reach the little ledge built into the bar so it was like sitting at a regular table.  Definitely a great option if you only have 2 people.

The inside was bright, roomy, and really clean.  It looked really welcoming.  All the female servers wear little white old fashioned dresses so it adds to that mom-and-pop restaurant charm.

They serve both breakfast and lunch but you have to ask for the lunch menu.  (Rob and I went again on Sunday around 12:30 and wasn’t offered another menu so I’m guessing you need to ask).

They had some really great options on the breakfast menu that you can’t always get at other places.  For example, I have never seen Rob order Pigs in a Blanket before.  He simply told me it is never on the menu any place else.

With Michele, I ordered the blueberry pancakes with a side of eggs while she ordered a Taylor Pork Roll omelet.

The omelet looked delicious!  I didn’t try it but it looked high quality and not greasy at all (my usual complaint when ordering eggs at restaurants).  My pancakes were just like homemade.  They were light and airy.  Most places have thick, fluffy pancakes.  I like thinner, runnier pancakes that bubble up when you cook them.  These were it.  I was really happy with my choice.

I didn’t take pictures of my food with Rob but I ordered the pumpkin pancakes to try something different.  It ended up not being what I was in the mood for, but they were still good.  The pumpkin gave them that thicker texture and they were topped with cinnamon butter.  I felt the cinnamon butter overwhelmed the pancakes and would order them with regular butter next time.

This is definitely someplace I wouldn’t mind going again!  They have 8 locations in the area, 2 of which are convenient for Rob and I to get to.  We’ll probably put this on our list of places to go in the winter time, when it isn’t so busy.  A bonus perk is that you can walk the 3 blocks to the beach afterwards!
