Because I wasn’t crazy enough, I’ve added another race to my schedule! I’ve registered for the Pedal Paddle Run – a triathlon of sorts… You see, instead of swimming, they have you kayak!
So not only do I not have to swim but I also get a break between riding and running. Have you ever done a brick workout? They are brutal.
There is only one problem with this whole plan – I don’t own a kayak. Luckily, you can rent one for the race but how do I practice before then? I wasn’t concerned because I figured I would just do mostly strength training exercises to prepare:
- Bent Over Rows
- Chest Flies
- Chest Press
- Shoulder Press
- Planks (for core stability)
But then I read a little note on the website that says you can’t have anyone help you get in the water unless they are on your team. Uh oh… I hadn’t thought about that! So if anyone has an tips about getting on the kayak and into the water, I’m all ears! I’m thinking just put it in very shallow water, hop on, and push your way out with the paddle? Hm…
So while my training last week was pretty lack luster, I picked up the reins again yesterday and did a 1 mile time trial. 12 minutes and 18 seconds. Not as fast as I would like for a 1 mile trial but that is where I am at and what I have to work with!
So that makes three races for my first season back. I might be crazy but it is going to be a lot of fun!

this sounds like so much fun!!! I know there are places here that you can rent paddle boats/kayaks. maybe just a thought to google? Cant wait to hear about training and how it goes! although, I am all about the swim in a triathlon 🙂
The last time I went, it was like $20 an hour. I haven’t called around though!
Wow, what a fun-sounding race!! I have no kayaking tips for you, I’m afraid, but the way you described it – shallow water, then using your paddle – is what I would think makes sense.
Well, I got a chance to practice and that method worked well! Now, getting out of the kayak alone was another story…
This sounds like such a cool twist using a kayak instead of swimming! I would totally be down for this kind of tri! I have always had someone push my kayak out after I got in it, so I don’t have any advice. But try to practice as much as you can and you’ll probably be able to pick up on it quickly! I got a chance to practice with a friend’s kayak on Friday! Yay! Getting out was actually the hardest (and I may have gone for a swim… LoL!)
