Safely in Florida

First, let me just say that I have been doing a lot more in Florida than just this:

Seriously, it has been pretty much nonstop since I left last Sunday for the 6-week practicum.  For those who are unfamiliar, a practicum, as defined by Wikipedia, is “a graduate level course, often in a specialized field of study, that is designed to give students supervised practical application of a previously or concurrently studied theory”.

So basically we just shadow the physicists, therapists, and dosimetrists while they do their thing.  Most of them try to give us a little explanation of what they are doing, and we are encouraged to ask lots of questions.  So far, I have had a great time and am learning a lot!  Nothing that interesting to talk about here.  We look at a lot of patient plans and do a lot of paperwork but it is part of the job!

So enough about working, how is the healthy thing going?  Well, it’s really not.  My schedule has kind of been all over the place and I feel like I’m either getting allergies or coming down with something.  Therefore, I’m putting sleep over morning exercise.  My diet has been all over the place.  Some days are good and then the next day we eat out.

There are also huge gaps between meals at the clinic which I sort of expected.  The thing is that it isn’t that we’re too busy to have a snack but it seems like no one eats.  Or they forget to eat.  I find this very odd.  Today for example, I finally asked to eat lunch at about 12:30 or so.  I hadn’t eaten since 7 and was dying.  I can’t last that long.  It seemed as if it slipped his mind!  I would feel rude snacking while someone was teaching/talking to me so that’s kind of out of the question.  A friend suggested I keep snacks in my purse and slip away to the ladies’ room for a second.  I think I might have to do this!

Speaking of bathroom breaks, no one seems to drink water so they don’t stop for that either.  Am I working with a bunch of machines?  I seem to be the abnormal one.  Who eats small meals and drinks lots of water?  Just this girl apparently!  On the bright side, I had been working on letting myself get hungry before eating.  So I am definitely doing that but the problem is that I am hungry for like 2 hours before the next meal!  Maybe I’ll adjust?

As for T25, I had to just stop for now.  Like I said, the crazy schedule and the feeling of getting sick has not helped.  I plan on just following the DVDs in order whenever I can get to them.  Then I will try the program again once my friend orders her copy, and we can do it together.  It is all too much right now.  I thought it would be more calm than it is!

Well, I am already pretty tired and want to get a few things done before winding down for the night so I should be off.  We should have the internet set up soon and I should be able to blog a bit more!  I miss being here regularly!  Until next time!

  1. Nice to see you’re doing okay!

Yeah, welcome to the real world!!! At my seasonal 2nd job (that I do now and then, though not for a couple of years), that was NOT a deal where people are needing to follow each other or work with each other, moreso: everybody’s INTENTLY working on a computer — it takes a lot of concentration.

Nobody got up to eat or pee. When I pulled a couple 10 hour days, I could hardly believe a few people *had* brought some snacks but basically only got up a couple of times THE WHOLE DAY. Once, I worked with a smoker and HE took smoke breaks about once every other hour (but was GONE for like 30 minutes, ha!). I had felt like a JERK cos I brought my huge bag of food for ya know, 10 hours and loads of water AND refilled my water at their fountain (in the building, not far away) and got up about once every 90 minutes to pee.

I don’t know if they thought anything of it but I bet they did. It’s like I was the ahole lazy person. I worked my tail off but I went PEE a lot!!!

This is something I’m considering with working anywhere else now: with IBD, sometimes I have bad days and I may need to be in there 20 minutes a few times, just saying. Maybe I should say it’s a smoke break? Ha!
