Start of 2017 Race Training

I mentioned briefly in my last post that I was registered for two races this coming April, the Philly Hot Chocolate 15K and the Atlantic City April Fool’s Half Marathon.  Today, I also put my name in the Broad Street Run lottery to try to do that race in May.  It is a 10 Miler and I’ve run it 3 times before already.  It is always a fun race for me and another friend is already in (she deferred from last year) so that would be cool too.

First Training Run of 2017

I have been trying to get mileage it, no matter the pace.  On Sunday, Rob and I went to our favorite local park to run the boardwalk.  My schedule said 4 miles and the boardwalk there is 2 miles so we could do an out-and-back.

The run didn’t go exactly as planned.  For one, the boardwalk was closed off about half way down and we were diverted down a dirt trail.  That’s fine if you’ve got the right sneakers on, which I did not.  So my calves and ankles were screaming at the soft, uneven ground.  I also have to use the ladies’ room for the last like 3 miles of the 4.5 mile run.  UGH.  Since its winter, there are no porta-potties in the park.  BIG FAIL.  So we basically took a speedy walk through the park.  Hopefully I will have better luck with my 5 mile run next weekend!

Weekday Stuff

I also attempted an easy 30 minute walk/run yesterday but I quickly realized it was a bad idea and ended up going home sick after only about a third of a mile.  Nothing serious but I didn’t do any more for the rest of the night.  Run fail.

Today, I’m just trying to get other healthy living things together.  I cooked a nice dinner and am trying to drink all my water.  I have to go to bed early too for an early shift tomorrow morning.  No formal exercise but I tried to move around more at work (though still not enough according to my step counter).  Tomorrow’s plan is to go for a run after work.  I am hoping that the weather holds out for me.  I’ll just shoot for another 30 minutes or so.  Every little bit will help come race day!

How many days per week do you typically exercise?

I am trying to run at least 3 days per week plus 2 days of strength training but that hasn’t been happening lately.  So I’m doing what’s most important – the running.  It is getting easier to get those workouts in though!
